Technology and Usability

What is considered good design? With advancing technology such as AJAX, there is so much more that can be done at the presentation layer of web applications. In the past advancing technology can be confusing to the average web user. Years ago, I had to take out auto-tab from a page we had on the production web site because customers get confused and flustered about being sent to another field. But I think we've gotten to a point where technology and usability are converging; technology is available to make UIs more friendly to your average user.
