The Secret

I had lunch with a couple of girlfriends on Thursday and one of them mentioned a book in Oprah's book club "The Secret". She knew an acquaintance, or a friend of a friend type, who read the book and completely transformed her own life. This person used to be a drug addict and had a pretty messed up life; bad things always happened to her. After reading the book and shifting her thinking, this person has since gone to school, taken up a respectable occupation, and is now living a happy life.

Having heard about such a miraculous book, I picked up the DVD from the library. The book is based upon the "Law of Attraction", which says that whatever you are focusing your energy on, good or bad, will come to you. To get what you want, it's a three-step process: 1) ask the universe for what you want, 2) believe that you will get it, and 3) stay open to receiving what you asked for. While there's some truth to the preaching of The Secret, the DVD probably pushes the concept a little too far. The cheesy graphics doesn't help either. The hubby said the whole thing sounds a little cult-ish. And it does borderline on religion; especially the last part of the DVD, where it seems to suggest that we are comparable to God. Much like everything else, I guess you gotta figure out which part of it makes sense to you.

On The Secret official site, I came across the writing of another New Thought author, Christian D. Larson. He wrote the following in his book "The Optimist Creed" in 1912, and I like it quite a bit.
Promise Yourself
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is something worthwhile in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful expression at all times and give a smile to every living creature you meet.
To give so much time to improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
To think well of yourself and to proclaim this fact to the world, not in loud words, but in great deeds.
To live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.
