White balance

I've been learning more about my Nikon D40. The other night, I propped the camera on the tripod to play with my friend's 55-200mm lens and took a few photos with various white balance settings to see how they look. Arty, being the good little baby, obliged to be my model.

This photo was taken with Auto White Balance. Not bad, and colors are fairly close to how my eyes perceived them, although it was slightly on the yellow side. I went into Photoshop and adjusted the Color Balance to add a little more red into the photo.

Then I progressed to try out the Tungsten white balance. It started out extremely blue, and as I adjusted the Tungsten white balance with a negative number, the photo became less blue. The photo below was taken with a -3 Tungsten White Balance. The photo straight out of the camera was pretty dark, so I went into Photoshop and adjusted the brightness, and also added a little red to the color balance. I personally prefer this photo more than the auto white balanced one above. What do you think?

Here's one more photo I took of Arty the next day with the same lens (but hand-held). I really like the effect from the long focal point and natural light from the sliding door.
